Whether you’re planning your route, checking in with family, or sharing your Outback adventure online, it’s important to understand connectivity options before you travel.
The Blackall-Tambo Region is primarily a Telstra-only coverage area, with limited or no service available from most other providers – even in town. Visitors relying on Optus, Vodafone or some Telstra wholesale providers may experience little to no reception throughout much of the region.
Travellers are encouraged to consider purchasing (and activating) a Telstra sim card for mobile phones before leaving regional areas or capital cities.
Need to connect? Drop in to a Visitor Information Centre in either Tambo or Blackall to access our Free Public Wi-Fi, or take a few nights to catch up in town with most accommodation providers in Outback Queensland offering Wi-Fi options for your convenience.
If you are looking to connect while exploring rural Queensland as a self-sufficient camper, consider satelite providers like Starlink – or you can enjoy the freedom of ‘switching off’ completely and reconnecting with the land around you.
There are a number of free Telstra public telephones in both Tambo and Blackall, with no cost to make a phone call and accessible 24/7.
You can locate the nearest public telephone via this link.
