TAMBO HERITAGE PRECINCT

Where the story of Tambo welcomes you

Step inside one of rural Queensland’s most genuine historical collections and uncover the stories of the oldest town in the west.

Located within Tambo’s original Post and Telegraph Office buildings, the Tambo Heritage Precinct preserves the people, places and events that have shaped the region for more than a century. These heritage-listed buildings once played a vital role in Australia’s early telegraph network, connecting northern Australia with the south. In 1904, they were famously relocated by bullock team and logs to make way for the town’s new Post Office, where they remain today.

Explore rooms filled with photographs, artefacts, wool industry displays, household treasures and memorabilia that bring Tambo’s pioneering past to life. Learn about station life, local families, transport, communications and the unique characters who helped build this resilient outback community.

One of the highlights of a visit is the interactive heritage displays, where visitors can sit back and listen to locals recount stories of Tambo’s colourful history, including tales of the town’s goat population, the telephone exchange, the old picture theatre and the only Qantas aircraft crash in the airline’s history.

Don’t miss the historic Post and Telegraph collection, featuring original equipment and an interactive Morse code display where visitors can see, hear and even try signalling messages themselves.

Managed by dedicated local volunteers, the precinct continues to grow with new displays and collections added each season. Visitors are also welcome to browse a selection of locally made arts, crafts and souvenirs available for purchase.

Whether you’re a history buff, curious traveller or simply looking to connect with the heart of the Outback, the Tambo Heritage Precinct offers an authentic glimpse into the stories that shaped western Queensland.
